Berniece Walton Mapes


Berniece Walton Mapes, 82, of Wellston, died unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon, December 14, 2002, at the Holzer Medical Center of Jackson. She was born in Wellston on January 19, 1920, daughter of the late Isam and Bertha Cheatwood Walton. She was a 1938 graduate of Wellston High School and a 1939 graduate of Tri-State Cosmetology School in Portsmouth. She worked for Hercules Trouser Co. for 11 years and then owned and operated her own grocery store for 12 years. She was a graduate of Rio Grande College with a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education, a graduate of Ohio University with a Masters Degree in Education, and took additional courses from Xavier University in Cincinnati. During this time she also taught Adult Basic Education for 7 years. She retired in 1994 from teaching in the Wellston City Schools for 33 years. She was past president of the American Association of University Women, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, member of Retired Teachers Organization and a member of the Wellston Senior Citizens Organization. She was also a member of Chapter 162, Order of Eastern Star in Wellston. She attended the First Baptist Church in Wellston. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chet Mapes; by sisters, Geneva Smith, Mildred Dillenger, Myrtie Barnes, and Bessie Daniels; by brothers, Everett, Earl, Pearl and Barton; also by three nephews, Clarence, Eugene, and Thomas Walton, who were reared in the home. She is survived by two step-daughters, Margo Mapes of Jackson, Ohio, and Maria Manzanares of Texas. She is also survived by several devoted nieces and nephews. Services were Wednesday, December 18, at the Jenkins Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mark Baker officiating. Burial was in Ridgewood Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Jenkins Funeral Chapel and Jason R. Winters.
