Stephen Lego


Mr. Stephen Lego died at his home near Clay, Wednesday, February 28th, after a short illness. His funeral was held Friday, March 2nd, at Cross Roads. Rev. Wellington Rogers officiating. Mr. Lego was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania in 1818. He married Mary A. Ridgely August 10, 1840. Twelve children were born to them of whom seven survive, viz John W., George and Marion and four sisters. Mrs. John Roberts, Mrs. A.R. Gilbert, Mrs. Dennis Hassett and Mrs. R. Herzog. His descendants include 36 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Lego would have been 82 years of age on June 2. He was a collier and burned his first pit of charcoal on the Callahan farm near Cross Roads in 1854. He followed the business in many places for the greater part of his life and was successful. He was a worthy citizen in every respect and his death will be mourned by many. His wife survives at the advanced age of 77 years. It may be noted in this connection, that the house in which he died is perhaps the oldest in the county. It was erected in 1818 the year that Mr. Lego was born.
