Charley Long Is Taken Tuesday

Early Wellston Merchant Succumbs to Long Illness at Age of 81

Charles L Long, who had lived in Wellston all his mature years and long a merchant on east Second St, died at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday morning at his home, east Second St. He had been failing in strength in recent years, but during the last five years he had been stricken repeatedly. He was 81 years old. Mr Long was born in Milton township near Lincoln Furnace Dec 7, 1868, a son of Abraham Wilbur Long and Margaret McCune Long. The family had been prominent in this county many years, from earlier times. He grew up in the farm and while a young man worked in the mines. He was one of the most productive miners who ever worked in old Wainwright mine. Later he same to Wellston to work with his elder brother, John C Long, and later bought a business block on Second St, where for many years he had a grocery store and later and exclusive shoe store, He retired about 15 years ago. Mr Long leaves his wife, who was Viola Reed before their marriage, 59 years ago. They have one daughter, Grace, who is Mrs Harold DeVol, and a granddaughter, Miss Louene DeVol. Surviving him also are two brothers and two sisters, James L and Harley Long, Mrs E E Chambers and Mrs C H Browne, all of this city. Two brothers are dead, John C and Ed L Long. Mr Long joined the Methodist Church in young manhood and was a member of the King's Men's Bible Class. Rev B H Wibbeler conducted the funeral service at the home this Thursday afternoon, and burial was in Ridgewood Cemetery, directed by the Gaskill Service. Mr Long was highly esteemed and widely known by a large acquaintanceship, who are saddened by his untimely death.
