Evan N. Jones

Mr. Evan N. Jones departed this life at his home near Samsonville, Jackson County, Ohio, December 23, 1897, after a lingering illness of several months, at the age of 68 years, 7 months and 15 days. He was born in Cardiganshire, South Wales, May 8, 1829, being the oldest of eight children born to John N. and Ann Jones, who, when the deceased was but eleven years of age, emigrated to America, landing in New York July 4, 1840, after a month's voyage. From there they went to Pittsburgh, where they abode a year and a half, thence to Gallipolis and from here to a farm near Centreville where they lived for three years. The parents now realizing the desirability of having a home of their own, purchased 80 acres of Government land on Dry Ridge, Lawrence County, and there removed, their son Evan remaining with them until he attained his majority, assisting in clearing the farm and in maintaining the family. Later, he found employment at Washington and Olive Furnaces, and in 1853 he assisted in the grading of the Portsmouth branch of the B&O; SW Railway, and the following spring in the building of Cambria Furnace. In the fall of 1854, when 25 years of age, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Griffiths, daughter of David and Elizabeth Griffiths, an estimable young lady of the same neighborhood. They went to housekeeping at Cambria Furnace and there resided 16 years. In the fall of 1869, he purchased his father's farm of 101 acres, near Washington Station, where he resided for 28 years, until the time of his demise. Deceased had been married 43 years. The fruit of this happy union was eight children, five boys and three girls. Four of the children preceded their father to the spirit world and four survive. The departed had been for many years one of the most active members of the C.M. Church at Bethel. In 1860, he was elected Sunday School secretary, serving for about 30 years. In 1869, he was elected secretary of the church, and March 25, 1887, he was elected church deacon. In both positions he served diligently and conscientiously until summoned from his labor to eternal rest. In his death the community has lost a good, quiet, law-abiding citizen, the church, a most faithful and unostentatious officer and servant, his family a kind and affectionate father and a devoted husband. Those surviving to mourn their loss are four children, the bereaved widow, two brothers, John and David, two sisters, Margaret and Jane and many other relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in the presence of a host of relatives and friends, in the Bethel Cemetery, Monday, December 27, 1897, to await the ressurection morn. Services were conducted by Rev. David Thomas assisted by Rev. W.R. Evans, Owen Jones, Peter Gray Evans and J.M. Jones.
