Dr. William Sly Hoy

Dr. W.S. Hoy Died Suddenly in Columbus Today

"If a year from today, I shall have been gathered to my fathers, I hope some school child will drop a flower on my grave and give a thought to my memory." So spoke Dr. William Sly Hoy two weeks ago today in the annual Memorial Day address which he delivered at Ridgewood cemetery and the wish was recalled by many today when the word came from Columbus that he had passed away suddenly and without warning from apoplexy at the home of his son, Dr. Carl D. Hoy at 2:30 this afternoon.

No details were given in the message which the son telegraphed to Mrs. F.A. Carraci with the request that she inform the widow.

Dr. Hoy was probably better known to his fellow citizens of Jackson county than any other one of their number.

Born at Benwood, Virginia, October 17, 1856, he was past sixty years of age. He received his medical education at the Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia, being valedictorian of the graduating class of 1876. Twenty seven years ago with his wife, who before their marriage, November 7, 1881, was Maude B. Tomlinson of Point Pleasant, W. Va., and their only son, he located in Wellston.

A skillful surgeon, he devoted practically all his time to that branch of his profession and soon after locating here, built the citys only hospital.

He was unusually gifted as an orator and his services as a public speaker were soon greatly in demand. In 1914 he was elected representative to the General Assembly from Jackson county and last fall was reelected. Since entering politics, he spent the greater part of his time in Columbus, neglecting his local practice to a great extent, and had planned on opening it again next week. Last Saturday night he went to Columbus and was in his usual good health.

Dr. Hoy had served as president of the local Board of Education and was also honored by the election to the presidency of the Association of American Railway Surgeons. He was a member of the Elks, Eagles and Red Men lodges of this city.

Surviving Dr. Hoy are his wife and only son, a brother, F.D. Hoy of Beaver, Pa., a half brother, Joe French of Charleston, W. Va., and a half sister, Mrs. Alex Purdy of Moundsville W. Va, who visited him and his family here a couple of years ago.

The body will be brought to the home here Thursday noon, accompanied by Dr. and Mrs. Carl Hoy and his sister in law, Mrs. J.A. Clark, who went to Columbus with him Saturday evening to visit her daughter, Mrs. Chester Barnhill, after a visit here with her sister.

The funeral arrangments will not be made until after the arrival of the body.
