Brigadier General John R. Hurd

TAPS SOUNDED FOR SOLDIER AND SOLON

Gen. J.R. Hurd, Born in County, Died in California

Brigadier General John R. Hurd, a native of Jackson county, whose life was a long adventure, died last Wednesday at his home at Long Beach, Calif., after a long illness. He was a brother of J.C. Hurd of Jackson, who first learned of his relative's death from The Telegram, and of Joseph H. Hurd of Portsmouth. General Hurd was born at Jackson Furnace January 4, 1838, but at an early age moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob S. Hurd to Portsmouth. As he grew to manhood, he was associated with his father in steamboating along the Mississippi river, and in 1857, followed the old Santa Fe trail to Fort Union, N.M. He fought through the Civil War with distinction, being first a member of the 2nd Ky. Reg. and later colonel of the 173rd Ohio, recruited at Gallipolis. He was brevetted brigadier of volunteers, March 13, 1865, for gallantry at Shiloh, Stones River, and Chickamauga, and for service throughout the campaign. While with the forces in 1861, he was captured with a number of other officers and sent to Libby Prison, from which he made a famous escape. At Chickamauga, his horse was shot from under him, but catching a bolting horse, he continued on his way. The veteran fighter was a member of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth general assemblies of Colorado, coming from Pueblo. For the past two years he has been a resident of Long Beach, moving from Denver. Besides his two brothers, he is survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Bertha Shaw, who were with him in California, and a son, Tracy Hurd of Amarillo, Texas. The funeral and interment took place in California.
