KILLED IN CLAY BANK

John Hayburn Crushed to Death at Puritan Monday

The first fatality to occur at Puritan since the Puritan Brick Company was organized more than four years ago happened Monday [15 Apr 1912], when John Hayburn received injuries while at work in the clay bank which resulted in his death two hours later. A fall of clay occurred and he was buried under about five tons of the wet dirt. His skull was fractured, one leg broken and he was injured internally. He was removed to his home near Puritan where his death soon resulted. Hayburn, who was 47 years old, is survived by his wife, five daughters and two sons, the oldest of whom is about twenty and the youngest about six months. He is a son of the late James Hayburn and a brother of Lewis Hayburn living near Mulga. The funeral was held at the home this noon, Rev. A. M. Payne officiating. Burial was in Lincoln cemetery in charge of Simons. The Wellston Telegram, Wellston OH; April 17, 1912
