Eliphaz Hutchison

Last Thursday morning the people of Coalton were shocked when the news spread that Eliphasz Hutchison had died suddenly at his home. It was generally thought that he was in perfect health but it is now known that he had several times told his wife that he had trouble with his heart. Thursday morning Mr. Hutchison, with the assistance of his neighbor C. F. Spellman, was engaged in butchering his hog and after he shot it and dragged it a short distance where they intended to dress it he fell over dead, heart failure being the cause. Mr. Hutchison was born in Lawrence county over sixty years ago, but practically all his life was spent in Jackson County where he worked as a miner and held the position of mine boss at different mines in the Valley. He had lived in Coalton for about thirty five years and was regarded as a good citizen and held in high esteem by all who knew him. He served several years as a member of the board of education and was elected and served several times as a member of the village council. He is survived by his wife and four daughters and one son. Mrs. Clark Hood of Akron, Mrs. Frank Craggs, of Wellston, Roy at Millfield and Mrs. E. G. Brohard and Chlorain Hutchison of Coalton, also three sisters and two brothers. Mrs. James Flemming of Willard, Ky., Mrs. James Woodford, Mrs. Luticia Collins and Perry Hutchison of Council Grove, Kan. and C. M. Hutchison of St. David, Ill. The funeral was conducted Sunday at 2 p. m. at the Methodist church by Rev. H. J. Dudley of Jackson and burial was in the Coalton cemetery under the auspices of Coalton Lodge No. 263 K. of P. of which order he was a member and the services were conducted at the grave attended by a large number of Knights including several from Jackson and Wellston. The funeral was the largest in attendance for some time. Of the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were two daughters, Mrs. Hood of Akron and Mrs. Craggs, husband and family from Wellston, his son Roy and wife from Millfield, a brother-in-law L. G. Dollison and wife of Logan, and two nieces, Mrs. Chloe Watson of Willard, Ky. and Mrs. Harry Bagley of Hamden.
