Frank "Fiddle" Foit

Frank {Fiddle} Foit, 78, Retired Hardware Merchant, Dies in Holzer Hospital.

Frank (Fiddle) Foit, who was just about as much of a Wellston institution as Monument Square, died this morning at 7:30 o'clock in Holzer Hospital, where had been a patient since Friday. The retired South Wellston hardware merchant was 78 years of age. He had been in fairly good health until stricken with a cerebral thrombosis. He was born in Wellston, a son of Chris and Mary Foit, August 24, 1884. In his early days he worked in mines around Wellston until he was afflicted with rheumatism, a condition which followed him through life. But this did not prevent him from working, and he first followed horse racing as a trainer and driver. During that period he played "fiddle" for square dances throughout the area, from whence he aquired his nickname. Later he took a job with the old superior Department Stores on East Broadway as a handy-man and from 1912 until 1931 worked in a similar capacity for the E.E. Chambers Company. In 1931 he decided to launch into business for himself. His first idea was to provide a store where residents of South Wellston could get household and automobile items, but in later years his store grew to a full-fledged hardware store, and he prospered. On August 10, 1959, two weeks before his 75th, he suddenly decided he had had enough, and abruptly closed the store, never to reopen it. He later sold the contents and the building, which is now owned by Albert Gibson. He was a member of the Wellston aerie, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and many years ago served as custodian of the lodge hall. His wife, Dolly Martin Foit, died March 30 of this year. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Barbara Holtz of Wellston, several step-children and nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Gaskill Funeral Service.
