Fred H. Ely


Fred H. Ely Dies, Former Mayor.

Fred H. Ely, a former Mayor of Wellston, passed away last Wednesday afternoon Feburary 3, at his home on Pennsylvania Ave. He was 83 years old and had operated a filling station for the past 33 years. Mr. Ely was born October 2, 1882, at Mineral, a son of the late Henry S. and Sarah Lancaster Ely. He moved to Wellston with his parents when he was three years old and his father operated a grocery store on Fourteenth street for many years. He was graduated from Wellston High school and attended Ohio University. When he was 36 years old he was elected Mayor of Wellston on the democratic ticket, and served one term. He was a member of the Wellston Methodist Church, having joined more than 71 years ago, making him the oldest living member prior to his death. Mr. Ely was married Sept 10, 1918, to Vennie Melvin, who survives him, as do two daughters: Mrs. Chester Harless and Mrs. Robert Burke. There are two grandchildren: Cheryl Harless and Patrica Burke. He also leaves one brother, Harry Ely, at the Maple Heights Rest Home; and three sisters, Mrs. Hartford West of Charleston, and Mrs. Dorie Clelland, of Columbus. He was preceded in death by three brothers. He was a member of Wellston Aerie No. 637, Fraternal Order of Eagles. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Rodgers Chapel with Rev D. H. Householder of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed in Ridgewood cemetery under the direction of Rodgers Mortuary.
