Elmer W. Eichelberg


Elmer W. Eichelberg, age 90, of Columbus, formerly of Jackson OH, passed away Monday, May 20, 2002, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He was born December 19, 1911, near Cedar Falls, Iowa to the late William and Minnie (Gerhold) Eickelberg. Elmer received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D in Food Technology from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. From 1937 until 1956 he worked for Fairmount Canning Company in Fairmount MN, and pioneered in the development of frozen food. From 1957 to 1968 he was involved in establishing a Chun King foods operation in Jackson, that is now Luiginos. From 1968 until 1972 he worked for RJR Foods worldwide. After his retirement, he was active as a Director for Foundations Relations, Rio Grande College, President and Executive Director of Jackson Chamber of Commerce, and International Executive Service Corps, consulting positions in Maylaysia, Portugal, Ecuador and Columbia. He was a very active member of the Jackson Rotary and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. In 1997 Elmer and his wife Emma moved to the Forum at Knightsbridge in Columbus. Survived by daughter, Ruth E. Thomas of Falls Church, Va. son, John E. Eickelberg of Upper Arlington, Oh. Grandchildren, John David Thomas of Annandale, Va., Mark Evan Thomas of Portland, Or. and Janeen Ellen Eickelberg of Nashville, Tn., a student at Vanderbilt. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 yrears, Emma Hansen, in 1998; parents and one sister Lucille Eickelberg Sheldon. Funeral service 1 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, in the Eisnaugle-Lewis Funeral Home, 28 Harding Ave., Jackson, with Rev. Dale Lykins and Janie Karl officiating. Interment will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
