Cecil T. Evans

Cecil Evans Dies at Cleveland

Wellston Boy Rises High in Railroad Service

Cecil T. Evans, who grew to manhood in Wellston and later arose to a high executive position in the New York Central railroad organization, died unexpectedly Thursday evening at Cleveland. He was a brother of Erfee Evans Ervin, living east of Wellston and a former teacher here. Mr. Evans, who was 51, was a son of Harry Evans, long time B&O railroad man in Wellston. His mother was, before her marriage, Emma Souders. Both parents are now dead. Cecil was born Sept. 13, 1905, at Gallia, five years before the family moved to Wellston, but his boyhood was lived here and he went through the public schools, graduating in the class of 1923. One of his classmates was Mildred Collins, whom he married Aug. 22, 1928. Meanwhile he had enrolled at the University of Cincinnati to study engineering on an alternating work and study plan. In 1925 he joined the New York Central railroad signal service, became a signal draftsman five years later, transferring to Cincinnati where his home was in Norwood. While there he was promoted to circuit engineer and then in 1955 to chief signal inspector for the railroad system. At that time he moved to Cleveland. There he held an executive position of high responsibility on one of the country's great railroads, the only one he had worked for. Mr. Evans leaves his wife and two daughters, both married, Mrs. Ruth Roth and Mrs. Eleanor Schulte, both of Cincinnati, and a grandson, David Roth. Besides Mrs. Ervin of Wellston, he is survived by another sister, Mrs. Ruth Davis at Columbus. The funeral was held Monday at Norwood and burial was made at Spring Grove cemetery.
