Raymond C. Collins


Funeral services were held at the Wellston Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon for Raymond C. Collins, retired Wellston clothing merchant, who died Wednesday Feb. 4 [1981], at Holzer Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Wellston, having been born December 24, 1901, a son of the late William and Christina Hayburn Collins. For a number of years he was head of the men's clothing department of the E. E. Chambers Company. With his brother, the late Howard Collins, he organized the H. and R. Collins company, the first store being in a room now part of the Sundry and News and when larger quarters became available the store was moved to the present location on Ohio Avenue. The store continues in operation. Bowse [a nickname by which Mr. Collins was popularly known] was a member of Black Diamond Lodge 538 of Wellston, in all local Masonic bodies and the Scottish Rite of Columbus. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. He is survived by his wife, Madelyn Brohard Collins, three sons Tom of Topeka, Ks., Joe of Ft. Lauderdale Fla., and Dan of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two daughters, Shirley Waugh of Jackson and Jane Hatten of Wellston. Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth Pierce of Mingo Junction and Mildred Evans of Cincinnati, 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters and his oldest son, Dick, who died as a young man. Services were held Sunday, Feb. 8, at the First Presbyterian church, Rev. John M. Taylor officiating. Burial was in Ridgewood Cemetery under the direction of J. P. Rogers.
