Madelyn Grace Brohard Collins


Madelyn Grace Brohard Collins died August 7, 1997, in Venice, Florida, where she had resided since 1988. She was born in Coalton, Ohio, on June 24, 1909, the daughter of the late Evan George Brohard and Mona Maude Hutchison Brohard. She was a graduate of Coalton High School and attended Ohio University. An accomplished musician, she played the trombone for the Coalton High School band and also in an all-woman band that traveled throughout the Midwest in the early 1930s as part of the Chautauqua educational movement. She was an organist at the First Presbyterian Church of Wellston from the 1950s to the 1980s and after retirement, she played the piano for senior citizens centers in Columbus, Ohio, and Venice, Florida. On June 23, 1934, Madelyn married Raymond C. Collins, who was a well-known area merchant in Wellston, where they resided until his death in 1981. Mrs. Collins is survived by her children, Shirley Waugh of Portsmouth, Ohio, Jane Hatten and husband Bud of Venice, Florida, Tom Collins and wife Maria of Topeka, Kansas, Joe Collins and wife Minnie of Margate, Florida, and Dan Collins and wife Patty of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; sisters Jeanne Branscomb of Venice, Fla., Patricia Warfel and husband Les of Venice, Virginia Isaman of Waverly, Ohio, and Betty Dixon and husband Ralph of Cleveland, Ohio; as well as 15 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard Collins. Mrs. Collins' body was cremated. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, September 10, 1997, at 11:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church of Wellston with John Pelletier officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgewood Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8 P.M. at the Rogers-McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Churh, c/o Deacons, 18 South Pennsylvania Avenue, Wellston, Ohio 45692.
