WELL KNOWN MAN CROSSED BAR

FUNERAL BEING ARRANGED FOR JOHN COLLINS

Local Young Man Is Killed On Cutting Machine At Mine No. 17 Yesterday

Funeral services are being arranged for John Collins, 29, young Wellston man who was killed yesterday [01 Nov 1928] at Superior No. 17 mine when his neck was broken on the coal cutter machine. Details of the fearful tragedy that snuffed the life of a popular young man were received from the mine today. Collins had been working with Arthur Angel on the machine, he was joking and talking with Angel when he let the bar stick into the rig, causing the bar to fly around, striking him in the back of the neck. Angel came around the machine and found Collins lying at the point of death. Death followed in fifteen minutes. The mine has been operated by Henry Angel and Frank Downard, who had been running a spear. Collins leaves his wife, who was formerly Mamie Coyle, and one little 3-year-old daughter, Norma Ruth. He leaves in addition his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Collins; and several brothers and sisters, Edward and Raymond, of Wellston; Howard, Columbus; Mrs. William Coyle, Wellston; Mrs. Cecil Pierce, Mingo Junction; Mrs. Harry Smith, New Carlisle; and Mrs. Cecil Evans, Clark Hill, Indiana. Mr. Collins had been married four years. He lived on Illinois avenue. He had been working at the mine for about one an a half months. Before that he had been a clerk at the Wellston Hotel and at one time managed the Virginia Sweet Shop. He was born and reared in Wellston and spent his entire life here.
