Rev. Alva Crabtree


Rev. Alva Crabtree, died at his home near Stockdale last Friday, after a brief illness and his death has cast a gloom over the community where he resided a lifetime, and where he was a recognized leader in social, church and political circles. Hon. Alva Crabtree was born Sept.30, 1849, Scioto Township, Jackson County, Ohio, son of Samuel and Belinda (Dixon) Crabtree, was one of a family of 10 children, eight of whom survive. He entered the Baptist ministry at the age of 16. From that time until his death Jan. 27, 1905, he had organized 15 churches, received over two thousand into the church, baptized 1400, preached almost 1000 funerals and married several hundred couples. Thirty five years ago he married to Sarah E. Brown and to them were born two son, Samuel and Nathan, who together with one grandchild survive the deceased. His funeral was preached Monday in the Stockdale Baptist church by Rev. Stevenson, and his body was take to Portsmouth for burial.
