SMYTH BROHARD DIES AT 63

VENICE MOURNS MAYOR

Venice's longtime city councilman and mayor, Smyth D. Brohard, Sr., died early Wednesday at Venice Hospital at the age of 63. The mayor had been ailing for several months and had been hospitalized for the past several weeks. He died around 5 a.m. Brohard was a native of Coalton, Ohio, where he was a math teacher and principal of Coalton High School. He moved to Venice in 1941. In 1947 he was elected city councilman and served in that capacity for ten years. In 1957 he was elected to the office of mayor, a position he held until his death. Mayor Brohard worked toward securing land from the federal government for public use. It was through his efforts that the city was deeded the beachfront at the Venice Airport without cost to the taxpayers. He also was instrumental in the construction of the Intracoastal Waterway through Venice, of the municipal fishing pier, and also in the development of a master plan for the development of Venice Airport. In honor of his services to the city, the City Council dedicated the beach property at the airport as a public park forever and designated it Brohard Park. The resolution was presented to the mayor last week. In addition to his work in city government, the late mayor owned restaurants in Venice and Fort Myers, and was active in both business and fraternal affairs for more than 30 years. He leaves his wife, Virginia; a son, Smyth D. Brohard, Jr., and a daughter, Gayle Peden, both of Venice; five sisters, Mrs. R. C. Collins, of Wellston, Ohio, Mrs. Virginia Isaman, of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Ralph Dixon, of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Bob Branscomb, of Medina, Ohio, and Mrs. George L. Warfel, of Washington, D. C.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at the Rawles Funeral Home, Venice, with the Rev. Donis Dean Patterson of Winter Park, former rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Venice, assisted by the Rev. James Russell Younger, present rector of St. Mark's officiating. Burial will be in Gulf Pines Memorial Park. The family has requested that contributions in lieu of flowers be made to the American Cancer Society.
