Mona Maude Brohard

MRS. BROHARD IS TAKEN BY DEATH, FUNERAL FRIDAY

Mrs. Evan Brohard who had lived at Coalton 78 years, since the beginning of the village, when it was first named Eureka, died at Holzer Hospital Tuesday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock. She had been sick several weeks and had been in the hospital for medical treatment since the day before Christmas. Mrs. Brohard had lived her whole life in Coalton, except her first year, had an unusual acquaintanceship in the village and the country around, gained during her long service in the postoffice. She first became a clerk when the late Abe James was appointed postmaster. It was the beginning of a long tenure. In her time her late husband was appointed postmaster and she continued assisting him as assistant postmaster. After his death, she was again a clerk, while Harold E. Rowe was postmaster, and since then for some time while Mrs. Rowe held the office. She was very efficient, and knew practically every family. Mrs. Brohard was born April 14, 1881, where Coalton now is, and her maiden name was Mona Maude Hutchinson. She was a daughter of Eliphaz (Life) and Jane (Dollison) Hutchinson. Her father was an early manager of old Richland Furnace near to Wellston, and was actively engaged in development of the great coal field around Coalton, managing the early mines. She was graduated from the Coalton high school in 1893, and probably the last of that class. It was the second commencement of the Coalton high school. She married Mr. Brohard on June 30, 1915. Mrs. Brohard had a fine natural musical talent, which she transmitted to her children. At one time her seven sons and daughters were quite sufficient to have an orchestra and they are still finished musicians. The sons and daughters are: Mrs. Raymond C. Collins, Wellston; Smythe Brohard, Venice, Fla.; Hayden Brohard, Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Virginia Isaman, at home at Coalton; Betty, who is Mrs. Ralph Dixon, Cleveland; Jeanne, wife of Robert Branscomb, Columbus; and Patty who is Mrs. George L. Warfel, Seabrook, Md. There are 24 living grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brohard's active interest in her community belied her years, and most acquaintances believed her to be several years younger than her 79. She often visited her daughter in Wellston, and spent much time in the Raymond Collins home with the grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Gaskill chapel, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Forest Donley of the Coalton Methodist church, and the Rev. Lucas Grile of the Wellston Presbyterian church, which she attended while here. Interment will be in Ridgewood cemetery, directed by Charles N. Gaskill.
