George W. Brohard

George W. Brohard was born in Harrison county VA, April 5 1813, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Leach, in Wellston, December 7 1899, aged 86 years, eight months, and two days. Was married to Matilda Baily July 12, 1838. Of this union were born nine children, three girls and six boys, all of whom lived to be grown. Two, Abel S. and Mortimor, have since gone to join the silent majority. Of the remaining seven, Lloyd lives in Coalton; Charity (now Mrs. Harris) resides at Columbus, Ohio; Joseph H., at Lake City, Ill.; John F., at Pleasant Valley; Sylvanus at Columbus, Ohio; M. A. (now Mrs. A. B. Leach) at Wellston, Ohio; Ida C. lives with her sister at Wellston. All of his children had the privilege of attending the last sad rites of his funeral except Joseph, who was too far away to reach here in time. Father Brohard joined the Baptist church and was baptized by Rev. John Wrightman about fifty years ago, and lived a consistent christian life until death took him from labor to reward. He lived to see all of his children members of the church, and no doubt he often thought, as did Paul when writing to the church, "the whole family in heaven." Four years ago last July the companion of his youth with whom he walked side by side for more than fifty-seven years, was taken away from him and he was left to fight the battle of life alone, and yet he was not alone, for the Master was with him, and by his side stood two faithful daughters, waiting and anxious to do what they could to make his declining years comfortable and happy, and it seemed during his last sickness, which lasted four months, his children, scattered as they were, stood ready and waiting to do something for father. The writer visited him often during his sickness, always found him patient and resigned, willing to go when the Lord should call. Thus has gone from among us one whose life was worthy of imitation, gone like Job says they go. "To thy grave in full age like a shock of corn cometh in his season."
