Evan G. Brohard, former mayor and postmaster of Coalton, and long a dominant figure in Republican politics in this county, passed away at Venice, Fla., Tuesday afternoon [18 Mar 1947] at 3:30 o'clock. He had been ailing for years, but till the end he held a vigor and zest for living that always sustained him. Mr. Brohard was 71 years old. He was born Sept. 28, 1876 near Parkersburg, W. Va., a son of Abel Smith Brohard and Electa Jane Riley Brohard. In childhood the family moved to the Pleasant Valley neighborhood, and shortly after Coalton was started, came to that thriving village. Mr. Brohard became a prosperous merchant, was attracted to politics, and had a prominent part in every civic movement in Coalton. He quit as mayor only when his health became badly impaired. He was the last of his father's family. Four sisters preceded him in death, Mrs. Hattie Fout, long a resident of Wellston; Mrs. Riley Gaskill and Mrs. Edith Hamer, all at rest in Ridgewood cemetery; and Mrs. George Cameron. In 1906 he married Mrs. Maude Hutchison, whom he leaves with two sons and five daughters: Smyth D.
