Heber Lee Armstrong


Heber Lee Armstrong, age 80, passed away at his home on Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at 6:15 p.m. He was born Aug. 27, 1921, in Jackson, to the late Oakley Lamar and Minnie Augusta Willis Armstrong. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph W. Armstrong, and his sister, Margaret E. (Armstrong) White. A World War II Army veteran, Heber was a former mayor of Coalton and a former member of the Coal Local School Board. He served as Jackson County Auditor for twelve years and had previously served as Deputy Auditor for two years. He worked for a time as probation officer of the Juvenile Court under Judge Scurlock. He was a former editor of the Wellston Sentry and a former staff writer for the Journal-Herald. Heber faithfully supported and attended the Wesley United Methodist Church and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coalton, Ohio. He was a fifty-four member of the Jackson Masonic Lodge and a long time member of the Jackson Rotary Club, with twenty-eight years of perfect attendance. As a Rotary member, he received the distinguished "Paul Harris Fellow Award" for outstanding service. He was a member of the Jackson County Farmers Club and a lifetime member of the Scioto Grange, and a faithful supporter of the Jackson County 4-H program and Jackson County Junior Fair, with thirty years' service as a 4-H advisor. With his wife, Ruth, Heber was a supporter of the Coalton Historical Society. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Elizabeth (Maerker) Armstrong; three sons and daughters-in-law, Edmund (Sharon) Armstrong and Dean (Denise) Armstrong, all of Jackson, and James (Tanya) Armstrong of Nashville, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Heather (Christopher) Callahan, Melissa Armstrong, Carrie Armstrong, Lara Armstrong, all of Jackson, Paul, Timothy and Rebecca Armstrong of Nashville, Tennessee; and one brother, Dale Armstrong of Jackson. Friends may call at Eisnaugle-Lewis Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 21 from 2 to 8 p.m. Masonic services will be held on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at Wesley United Methodist Church, where the body will be in state one hour prior to the service with Rev. William R. Goodall officiating. Burial will follow in Hannah Cemetery.
